We were undecided as to whether to stay in Xiamen or on the island of Gulangyu. Luckily we chose the latter. There are no cars or bikes on the island and the only means of transport allowed are little electric buggies which play a little tune when they approach from behind. This hotel is just near the ferry port, which is great when you arrive late at night or you want to go back and for to Xiamen, but you have to balance this with it being a little noisy - the tour guides with loudspeakers start up around 7.30am! However, this wouldn't put me off staying here again. Rooms are quite small, but adequate our room had a 4-poster bed, bathroom and shower and great. Our room exited into a little corridor where we sat and enjoyed drinks overlooking Xiamen in the evenings. Staff are very helpful, but have limited English, so booking in took quite a bit of time even though one of our party spoke Chinese. The night 'watchman' did a lot of loud coughing in his room next to our friends which kept them awake and when we came in late he opened the door to us in his underwear - rather unfetching long-johns, but we just found it amusing.... This stay gave an insight into 'colonial life' at the Consulate and the island was a real haven. Enjoy your stay
